ZINGER SPACE LAUNCH // KFC

ZINGER SPACE LAUNCH

In 2017, KFC’s most famous sandwich in the world — the Zinger Chicken Sandwich — was available for the first time ever in the United States. So we decided, since it was finally everywhere on Earth, that space was the only place left to send it.

We partnered with World View to charter a launch program for our heroic Zinger, and for four months we methodically prepped for the interplanetary journey by:

  • testing the sandwich in high-altitude conditions (seriously, we needed to know what would happen to it once subjected to stratospheric air pressure and temperature)

  • building a webGL mission control website where users could track the Zinger’s mission progress and subsequent journey in real time

  • engineering a robotic bucket-satellite-shaped flight vehicle equipped with a remote-operated selfie stick, tweet-to-space module and Black Magic cameras with satellite downlink capabilities in order to stream footage from space

  • filming and releasing behind-the-scenes content to document the campaign

  • live-streaming the launch so the whole world could tune in to witness history

The project garnered over four billion impressions and was covered by The New York Times and Popular Science before the sandwich ever left the ground.

Immediately following our live launch we produced this recap film, confirming to the world that we did indeed send a Zinger Chicken Sandwich to space.
